Today we celebrate the birthday of one of the most influential singers in rock music history, Robert Plant!
The icon fronted the biggest band of the 70’s Led Zeppelin, from 1968 until their breakup in 1980, after the death of John Bonham. In that time Led Zeppelin blazed a trail across the world of music that defied and defined the decade, with the biggest albums of all time. After the death of his friend, the band went their separate ways and Plant went into the 80’s as a solo act, with the only exception of being a short time member of The Honeydrippers and scoring a hit with the cover of Phil Phillips “Sea Of Love”.
After, his stint with The Honeydrippers, Plant’s solo career took off with his early hits “In The Mood” and “Little By Little”, then his release of Now And Zen shot up the charts on the back of his hit “Tall Cool One”. He would continue into the 90’s with “Manic Nirvana”, and end the decade teaming back up with Jimmy Page for a highly successful “Unplugged “ album. Recently his collab with Alison Krauss has brought him back into the limelight after his run of dates with a reunited Zeppelin, for the Miracle Day concerts.
Robert Plant is the textbook definition of what a great rock singer should be, and singers to this day still take some aspect of what they do from his shining example. In 1995, Led Zeppelin were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as Plant himself was ranked at number 4 on billboard’s list of The 50 Greatest Rock Lead Singers of All Time.
Happy Birthday Robert, you’ve given the world a Whole Lotta Love.
