"Pink Floyd At Pompeii" Coming To IMAX, Then To Be Officially Issued As A Live Album

Pink Floyd's 1972 film, Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII, is headed back to theaters and IMAX screens beginning April 24th. The film, which has been digitally re-mastered in 4K from the original 35mm footage with enhanced audio mixed by Steven Wilson, shows the band performing without an audience in the ruins of the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy in 1971. It was the first concert held in Pompeii and includes performances of Echoes," "A Saucerful of Secrets," and "One of These Days." The film also includes behind-the-scenes footage of them beginning work on The Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road Studios.

The film was restored by hand, frame-by-frame, from the original 35mm cut negative - discovered in five dubiously labelled cans within Pink Floyd's own archives.

Lana Topham, Director of Restoration for the band, says, "Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd at Pompeii, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment. The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after.”

The film will be accompanied on May 2nd by the soundtrack album on CD, vinyl, digital, and, for the first time, in Dolby Atmos. And finally, with this news comes the release of video clip of them performing "Echoes," which you can see on YouTube. Tickets for the film go on sale next Wednesday, March 5th, at 9am ET at PinkFloyd.Film. In 2016, David Gilmour returned to the same amphitheatre, where, in front of an audience, he filmed and recorded Live in Pompeii, which he released in 2017.

PAUL McCARTNEY: Pen Takes Flight in New Book

Paul McCartney has a new book coming. Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, recounts the days of the band he formed following the break-up of The Beatles. He says, "I’m so very happy to be transported back to the time that was Wings and relive some of our madcap adventures through this book. Starting from scratch after The Beatles felt crazy at times. There were some very difficult moments, and I often questioned my decision. But as we got better, I thought, ‘OK this is really good.’ We proved Wings could be a really good band. To play to huge audiences in the same way The Beatles had and have an impact in a different way. It was a huge buzz.”

Compiled from dozens of hours of interviews with McCartney and numerous key players in the band’s history, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run was edited by historian Ted Widmer and contains more than 100 black-and-white and color photos, many of which never been seen.

It will be published on November 4th.

BILLY IDOL: Audio Biography

Billy Idol has released a taste of his new album, Dream Into It, by releasing the first single, "Still Dancing." He says the song is "really a reflection of my whole journey. From the punk rock period through to now. And I’m still looking towards the future, still living the life I set out to live. “At the start of the song I’m recalling the early times in London, when I was living in squats or at friends’ apartments, all my belongings in a plastic bag. Everybody at home or work told you what you were doing was never going to happen. But punk rock gave me an opening. I was surrounded by people who loved the music as deeply as I did and you were going to throw caution to the wind, believe in what you were doing and grab on for dear life. “As the song says, there have been many moments along the way where I’ve been self-destructive. But what’s seen me through is that unflinching belief in the music that started all those years ago. That’s been the greatest gift of all.”

The album, which tells his life story, is his first since 2014's Kings & Queens of the Underground. Set for release on April 25th on the late George Harrison's Dark Horse Records, it features appearances by Joan Jett, who he's touring with this summer, Avril Lavigne, and Alison Mosshart from The Kills.
