U2: Bono's Sunday Bloody Sunday

This Saturday -- November 16th in 2014 -- marks the 10th anniversary ofĀ BonoĀ taking a header inĀ New York's Central Park. "I bust[ed] myself real bad on a bicycle, which really offends my Irish macho view of myself in the world. But, I've got a titanium elbow. I've got a new arm basically. I can't play guitar. That's the only bummer. I don't know if I will be able to play it again. The band don't seem to mind." He was rushed to New York–Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center, where after five hours of surgery, orthopedic trauma surgeon

Dean LorichĀ said, "The elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws." In addition to his arm, he fractured his shoulder blade, humerus, orbit -- which houses your eyes -- and pinky finger.

But Bono told us his recovery did prove to be beneficial. "One of the gifts of my injuries was the gift of time because I was laid up. I couldn't do anything. So, for me it's been a very creative time for me as a writer and a songwriter." The accident forcedĀ U2Ā to cancel a week of appearances onĀ The Tonight ShowĀ in support of their 13th album,Ā Songs of Innocence, and to push back their world tour to 2015. And, if Bono has played the guitar since, it appears he hasn't done so in public.
