For the first time in history, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given its stamp of approval to meat that was grown in a lab.
Upside Foods, a California-based company that produces meat from cultured chicken cells, has been given the go-ahead to start selling its products to consumers -- just as soon as the Department of Agriculture inspects its facilities, the FDA has revealed.
Although the product made by Upside Foods doesn't come from farm animals, that doesn't mean it isn't real meat, says the company's found and CEO, Uma Valeti. "It's similar to brewing beer, but instead of growing yeast or microbes, we grow animal cells," Valeti says. "These products are not vegan, vegetarian or plant-based; they are real meat, made without the animal."
