A South Carolina woman has died in what can best be described as a freak beach umbrella accident.
Tammy Perreault, 63, was relaxing on a Garden City beach when a strong wind lifted a beach umbrella from its anchoring and sent it hurling toward her, authorities say. The pointy tip of the umbrella penetrated her chest and she died after being transported to a local hospital, according to Horry county chief deputy coroner Tamara Willard.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says about 3,000 people are injured by beach umbrellas every year.
