U.S. Tops Five Million Coronavirus Cases

The number of coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed five million on Sunday (August 9) as the pandemic continues to surge across the country. Five states account for 40% of all the cases in the country. California leads the nation in total cases followed by Florida, Texas, New York, and Georgia.

The United States took 99 days to reach one million cases, then 43 days to surpass two million, 28 days to hit three million, 15 days to top four million, and 17 days to reach five million.

The U.S. has the most confirmed cases in the world, followed by Brazil, which has reported more than three million cases. The U.S. also leads the world in deaths, with more 160,000. Experts are predicting the number of deaths could hit 200,000 in the next 40 days.
